What to Expect During a Colonoscopy

What to Expect During a Colonoscopy

Colon cancer, unlike others, may not exhibit any noticeable signs in its early stages. Symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, and stomach aches are sometimes easy to dismiss, but when they become recurring problems it may be time to see your doctor. A colonoscopy is just one of the types of tests that your Greenbelt, MD, doctor can conduct to assess the cause of symptoms. To learn more about all the benefits of a colonoscopy please reach out to Dr. Sushil Rattan and Dr. Radman Mostaghim.

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is one of the best methods for screening for colon cancer and treating it as early as possible. Using a colonoscope, a thin and flexible device with a very small camera at the end of it, the doctor can examine the inner lining of the colon. What the doctor looks for are polyps, which are abnormal growths that can potentially become cancerous.

What to Expect

The colonoscopy itself is not much different from other medical procedures and it often takes around 30 minutes, sometimes even less.

You will however need to arrange driving accommodations as you shouldn't drive after the procedure due to the required anesthesia.

But before the procedure begins, preparation for it often starts days before. Your doctor will give you a very specialized diet that will gradually change until the day of the colonoscopy. You will need to follow these instructions very clearly, including the use of a bowel prep the day before.

As the anesthesia is administered your doctor will be there and will explain the procedure and answer questions you might have. After the procedure is done you will be directed to a recovery area until you are cleared to go home.
