What You Can Do for Stomach Pain

Stomach pain happens to most of us on occasion, whether caused by indigestion, overeating, cramping, illness or infection. While it usually dissipates on its own, stomach pain can affect your day in more ways than one, making eating unpleasant, daily tasks uncomfortable and nights sleepless.

Dr. Sushil Rattan at GI Med Health in Greenbelt can help you identify the cause of your stomach pain, and has tips for you for alleviating discomfort.

Overeating or indigestion

If you have overindulged at a meal or are suffering side effects from spicy or acidic foods, trying an over-the-counter anti-bloating or antacid can help diminish your discomfort. Drink plenty of water and eat lightly for the rest of the day to give your stomach time to settle.

Constipation

Constipation can leave you feeling uncomfortably full, bloated or cause pain across the abdomen. If you find yourself constipated for several days at a time, ask your doctor at our Greenbelt office if a stool softener or laxative can help. Staying hydrated and eating fiber rich foods can also help with having regular bowel movements.

Stomach pain ulcer

Stomach pain can also be the result of a bacterial infection or overuse of pain relievers. Ulcers require treatment from a gastroenterologist, with potential remedies including the use of proton pump inhibitor medications to reduce acid and assist healing, or a prescription for antibiotics to kill the bacteria. Your doctor at our Greenbelt office may also suggest a prescription antacid medication.

If you are experiencing intensive stomach pains, excessive bloating, vomiting, changes in bowel movements, unintended weight loss or a burning sensation, make sure to call our Greenbelt office.

Diet

If you find certain foods or drinks, such as dairy, citrus fruits or coffee cause you stomach pain, avoid consuming them or ask your doctor about taking an antacid or medication for lactose sensitivity in tandem. Make sure to chew your food thoroughly and limit especially fatty foods.
